PM Modi chairs debate on maritime security, cooperation; 1st Indian PM to chair UNSC meet

The debate is being attended by several top dignitaries across the world including Russian President Vladimir Putin. Many UNSC member states are expected to attend the meeting, the MEA said.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is chairing United Nations Security Council (UNSC) debate on “Enhancing Maritime Security — A Case for International Cooperation” via video conferencing.

Narendra Modi has become the first Indian Prime Minister to chair UNSC debate. The debate is focussing on ways to effectively counter maritime crime and insecurity and strengthen coordination in the maritime domain.

“Modi would be the first Indian Prime Minister to preside over a UN Security Council Open Debate,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement earlier.
