Rahul Gandhi disqualified as Lok Sabha MP: How netizens reacted

New Delhi: As Congress lawmaker Rahul Gandhi lost his membership from Lok Sabha following conviction & sentencing, a big political fight began between the grand old party & Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Leaders from both parties fired barrage of charges at each other. Congress leaders vowed to step up the fight against ‘oppressive regime’ while BJP termed it a ‘genuine punishment’ for the offence he committed.

Besides pitched battle between the Center & political rivals, lot many citizens also took keen interest & elicited many comments on the social media.

While many ‘saffron supporters’ didn’t see any wrong in Rahul losing his Lok Sabha membership, others saw a ‘design & conspiracy’ behind the entire episode.

Some poked fun at the Congress MP and dubbed him as Former Congress MP.

For the unversed, Rahul Gandhi is no longer a Congress MP from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency as his membership stands cancelled after his conviction & sentencing by a Surat Court in ‘Modi surname’ defamation case.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Surat court held Rahul guilty of the offence and sentenced him two years in prison, however also allotted him 30 days time to appeal against the sentence.

The law mandates that once a lawmaker either MLA, MLC or MP is convicted & sentenced to 2 years punishment, he/she stands to lose his membership with immediate effect.

According to legal experts, Rahul can restore his LS membership only if he get convicted stayed or cancelled by the higher court.

“Suspension or stay on the sentencing won’t save him from disqualification from the House,” said Kapil Sibal, one of the finest legal minds of the country.
