New Delhi: Rajasthan Congress MLA Bharat Singh has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking for removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s portrait from Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 currency notes. The demand come under the logic that the high denomination currency is being used in corruption and in bars.
“I am writing this letter on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the 75th anniversary of our independence. A lot of development has been done in these 75 years but there is large scale corruption also in the society,” Bharat Singh wrote in his letter.
According to news agency PTI, Singh wrote in his letter, “It is my suggestion that a picture of Gandhi’s spectacles can be used on ₹500 and ₹2,000 currency notes. Ashok Chakra can also work effectively for this purpose”.
“Mahatma Gandhi symbolises truth and Gandhi’s picture is printed on ₹500 and ₹2,000 notes, which are generally used in practices of corruption and in exchange for bribes. The high-value currency notes are being used in bars which are a disgrace to Mahatma Gandhi” he added.
He further demanded through his letter, “Gandhi’s portrait should be removed from ₹500 and ₹2,000 currency notes and it should be used only on small currency notes which are used by the poor”.
