New Delhi: The Zila panchayat of Aligarh passed a resolution seeking to rechristen Aligarh as Harigarh, calling it a “long-pending demand” on Monday.
According to the Hindustan Times report, the proposal was passed in the first meeting of the panchayat without any opposition with 50 out of 72 members in attendance. Now, it will be forwarded to the state government for approval.
Zila panchayat chairman for Aligarh, Vijay Singh said that renaming Aligarh as Harigarh is a long pending demand. The Zila panchayat approved the proposal unopposed.
The Zila panchayat chairman also informed that a proposal has also been passed to name the airport of Aligarh after BJP leader Kalyan Singh.
Also, earlier in the day, the Zila panchayat of Mainpuri passed a resolution seeking to rename Mainpuri as Mayan Nagar.
