UP Panchayat Elections 2021: HC stays reservation process, 2015 to be treated as base year

As per court directions, reservation policy will be applied in the elections but 2015 will be treated as the base year for implementation. This means the Gram Panchayat Elections will be delayed in the state by sometime.

New Delhi: In a setback for Yogi Adityanath government, the Allahabad High Court has stayed the reservation process in UP Gram Panchayat Elections.

The Lucknow bench of High Court asked the state to stop reservation process in the three-tier Panchayat elections. As per court directions, reservation policy will be applied in the elections but 2015 will be treated as the base year for implementation, reported a leading daily.

This means the Gram Panchayat Elections will be delayed in the state by sometime.

The High Court has also set May 25 as the deadline to conduct Panchayat Elections in the state.

The court verdict comes after a PIL was filed which raised objections over state government treating 1995 as the base to reserve seats on rotation.

As per earlier notification, the state govt had released reservation list and directed officials to conduct the three-tier elections by April.
