‘Withdraw Padma Shri, arrest Kangana’: Clamour grows against ‘bheek’ remark, politicians gun for actress

Talking to the media, Kangana Ranaut said that India got its independence in 2014 under PM Narendra Modi’s regime while the 1947 independence was a “bheek.”

New Delhi: Following the controversial comment made by Kangana Ranaut on India’s independence, politicians from across parties are asking the government to withdraw Padma Shri bestowed on the actress. Speaking to the media, Kangana said that India got independence in 2014 under PM Narendra Modi’s regime and that 1947 independence was “bheek” or alms.

Congress leader Anand Sharma, took to Twitter tagging President Ramnath Kovind to immediately withdraw the Padma Shri awarded to Kangana. He said, “Before giving such awards, mental psychological evaluation should be done so that in future such persons do not disrespect the nation and its heroes.” Besides, calling her “outrageous” Sharma stated that Kangana has disrespected India’s courageous freedom fighters.  “Kangana Ranaut’s statement heaping insult on the courageous freedom fighters led by Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and Sardar Patel but also belittling the sacrifices of revolutionaries like Sardar Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekar Azad and several others,” he stated in a series of tweets.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi should break his silence and tell the nation if he endorses the views of Ranaut. If not, the government should take appropriate legal action against such people,” he added.

Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik has also criticised Kangana’s comment and urged for her arrest. He tweeted, “We strongly condemn actress Kangana Ranaut’s statement that India got freedom in 2014. She insulted freedom fighters. The Centre must take back the Padma Shri from Kangana and arrest her.”

Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi also condemned Kangana for her actions and stated, “The Padma Shri conferred upon Kangana Ranaut should be withdrawn forthwith. Else the world will think that Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Bhagat Singh, Kalam, Mukherjee, Savarkarall had begged to get freedom.”

Criticism of Kangana also came from the Bharatiya Janata Party. MP Varun Gandhi stated that “Sometimes an insult to Mahatma Gandhi’s sacrifice and penance, sometimes respect to his (Mahatma Gandhi’s) killer, and now an insult to the sacrifices of lakhs of freedom fighters — from Shaheed Mangal Pandey to Rani Laxmibai, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and more. Should I call this madness or treason?”

Besides, the Aam Aadmi Party has filed an application to the Mumbai Police against Kangana and demanded a case to be registered against her. Preeti Sharma Menon, APP’s national executive member termed her statement as “seditious and inflammatory.”

Here’s how others reacted to Kangana’s comment:
