3 years after husband’s demise, wife becomes Lieutenant in the Indian Army

After the demise of her husband, Jyoti Nainwal has been commissioned the Lieutenant in the Indian Army on November 20.

Three years after the demise of her husband, Naik Deepak Nainwal, the 33-year-old Jyoti Nainwal was appointed as the Lieutenant in the Indian Army on November 20. After rigorous training of 11 months, Jyoti Nainwal became the one among the 29 women to pass out the parade of the Officers Training Academy on Saturday.

The mother of two is the first member from her side of the family to join the Army. “I would like to thank my husband’s Mahar Regiment. They stood with us through thick and thin and whatever I am today is because of the regiment,” said Jyoti.

Soon after losing her husband, Jyoti started preparing fr the Service Selection Board test for entry into the armed forces officer cadre. Naik Deepak Nainwal succumbed to injuries in May 2018 while fighting against the terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag a month after.

“I am the proud daughter of Deepak Nainwal,” said Jyoti’s nine years old daughter, Lavanya while waving at her mother from the gallery. She was accompanied by her seven years old brother, Reyansh.

As many as 153 cadets were commissioned on Saturday. At least 16 men and nine women hailing from Afghanistan, Bhutan, and Maldives completed their training.

Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen CP Mohanty stated that women officers play a significant role in the Army over the past few decades. Besides, he presented the Sword of Honour and OTA gold medal to ACA Siddhanth Sharma, the silver medal to BUO Dimple Singh Bhati, and the bronze medal to BCA Muneesh Kumar.
