Maha Shivratri 2022: 5 delicious and easy-to-make food for day long fasting

The devotees break their fast (vrat) from food made with wheat, dal, rice or pulses. Besides dry fruit and fruits, here are some easy-to-make foods and their recipes to make on Maha Shivratri.

Mahashivratri 2021: Foods you can eat and break your fast with

New Delhi: Maha Shivratri is celebrated every year to worship Lord Shiva. This year Maha Shivratri falls on March 1.

 

According to Hindu Mythology, this day is believed as a remembrance of “overcoming darkness and ignorance” in life and the world. This day is also known as the ‘Great Night of Shiva’.

 

Devotees visit Shiva temples, offer prayers, chant mantras and maintain fast. Mahashivratri is observed on the 14th night of the new moon in the month of Phalguna.

 

The devotees break their fast (vrat) from food made with wheat, dal, rice or pulses. Besides dry fruit and fruits, here are some foods and their recipes to make on Maha Shivratri.

Delicious recipes to break your fast with: 

1) Sabudana Kheer

Ingredients: ¼ Cup sabudana, 1 cup milk, 4 tbsp sugar, ¼ Cardamom powder, 1 tbsp dry fruits

Recipe: First, soak the sabudana in water for 30 minutes. Cook the sabudana in a cup of water to soften it. Add milk, cardamom powder and sugar accordingly. Mix till it thickens. Cook it till it boils up and garnish with dry fruits and serve.

 

2) Sweet Potato Chips

Ingredients: Potatoes, cardamom powder, ghee and sugar

Recipe: Wash and peel off the potato’s skin and further slice them into a round shape. Deep fry the round slices in ghee properly and dip into the sugar syrup. Sprinkle some cardamom powder for the taste on it. They are done when they are crispy enough.

 

3) Rajgira Puri

Ingredients: Boiled potatoes, Rajgira/Amaranth flour, Carrom seeds/Ajwain, oil, salt, red chilli powder and water.

Recipe: Add water to the Rajgira flour and knead it until the dough is soft. The dough is to be covered for 20 minutes. Using fingers and palm to make small balls from the dough and further make puris of it. Deep fry puris and serve them hot with potato sabzi, tea or chutney.

 

4) Rice Tikki

Ingredients: Sama/vrat rice, green chilli, boiled potatoes, water, red chilli, salt and oil

Recipe: Steam sama/vrat rice in a pressure cooker and mix everything together. Knead the soft dough to make small and round Tikkis. Deep fry the tikkis and serve them hot with some chutney or tomato sauce.

 

5) Jeera Aloo

Ingredients: Potatoes, oil/ghee, green chilli, cumin seeds, coriander

Recipe: Boil potatoes in a pressure cooker till they are tender and cooked. Peel and chop the potatoes. In a pan, stir fry the potatoes in a pan till the color is changed to dark brown. Add chillis and cumin seeds and stir for a while. Add 3 tbsp chopped coriander leaves and salt. Stir it for few minutes and serve it hot with puri, chutney or tea.
