New Delhi: World Health Organisation’s (WHO) World Mental Health Report said that mental health is one of the leading cause of disability.
Dr Mark Van Ommeren explained about this in ScienceIn5.
He said that WHO does an advance calculations when coming up which such conclusions like that. These conclusions include different sources of information.
If an individual, when they have a mental health condition such as depression, it’s actually very impairing.
In many work place, the leading cause for people not being at work an taking sickness leave is because of mental health condition, althought that’s not often said.
Dr Mark Van Ommeren further said that these conditions are very common.
When does this mental conditions start?
He said that these conditions begin at the teenage years, in adolescent years and are largely untreated.
Talking about the treatment, he said that only less than one in three people around the world is getting mental health care for their mental health condition.
How did the pandemic impact our mental health?
The pandemic has been very hard on people’s lives and it has really shone a light to mental health.
The rates have gone up in the first year of the pandemic for anxiety and depression.
About 25 per cent, meaning about 25 per cent more people than before had depression or anxiety.
On the other hand, for suicide the rates didn’t go up, but is being monitored strictly.
How to keep oneself mentally healthy?
# One must stay physically active.
# To keep oneself mentally healthy one must avoid alcohol (Alcohol is often used by people to think that they would be mentally feeling better).
# One must try doing something meaningful or enjoyable everyday. For eg, taking to a friend or going for a walk.
# Also, one can follow stress management techniques such as mindfulness
