Watch Video: Groom defends dowry, threatens to leave if demand not met

Believed to be from Bihar, the video shows a groom defending his family’s demand for dowry and refusing to proceed with the wedding until his demands are met.

New Delhi: Globally, International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8. The day marks the celebration of womanhood and their hard work throughout their lives. Although a lot has been achieved, a lot more needs to be done for the improvement of women in the coming years. A video recently went viral on the internet which shows that more improvement is needed to empower a woman.

Believed to be from Bihar, the video shows a groom defending his family’s demand for dowry and refusing to proceed with the wedding until his demands are met.

The groom was seen in wedding apparel and the bride stood beside him. The man said, “How is it wrong? Who says there is no dowry system? It happens everywhere, some are known, some are not. You came to know because I did not get it, if I did, you would not know. That’s it.”

Reportedly, the family of the bride said that part of the dowry has been arranged and has been assured to pay the rest later. To this, the groom replied, “Whatever has to happen will happen today, now. The wedding will take place only if my demand is fulfilled. Otherwise, we will leave with the baraat.”

The groom stated that the bride’s family confirmed to him that all he had asked for had been arranged. “It was only after we came here that we found that all of it had not been arranged.”

Pointing out the harsh reality of patriarchy, he said that the bride’s family should have found a match within their “aukaut”. “If they approach people better off than them, people with government jobs and are not able to pay, how will the wedding take place? We have spent so much on the wedding. How will we manage?” said the groom.

The bride is heard telling the groom that he will soon get the remaining sum to which the groom adds that a gold chain and ring are also pending and said that he wants all of them immediately.

The groom is said to have a “government” job while his father is a teacher. Those who were heard speaking to the groom said that he is “educated” and that he should be mindful of the “humiliation” both the families would face if the marriage does not take place. The groom is told to convince his father. The video ends with him reluctantly agreeing.

The video was shared by the deputy director of public relations for the Maharashtra government.
