World Autism Awareness Day: Here’s what you need to know!

New Delhi: The United Nations every year celebrates World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 and the sole motive is to spread awareness among people.

Only awareness will help people to understand and accept the ones who are suffering from autism, support them, and spread kindness.

This day is celebrated by organizing lots of events and conferences that include information and education conferences whether it is for teachers, parents, or health care workers. Exhibitions and art workshops are also organized by showcasing the work created by children with autism.

Autism is a neurodevelopment disorder that is characterized by deficits in social-language communication, including repetitive behaviours and restricted interests too. There is a wide range of abilities among children and adults with an autism spectrum disorder. Some people have delayed or limited verbal communication that means they cannot speak at all.

According to the 2011 census, in India, there are 78,62,921 children below the 19 year age group with disabilities, out of which 5,95,089 have an intellectual disability. Also, the study revealed that one in 66 children was autistic in India.

One can notice the symptoms of the disorder from the age of two to three years that is from childhood. Symptoms include the inability to perform daily tasks, trouble in building relationships, paranoid and limited-repetitive abnormal behaviour.

Every year since 2012, the UN gives a theme for the celebration of the World Autism Awareness Day. And for this year that is 2021, the theme is ‘Inclusion in the Workplace: Challenges and Opportunities in a Post-Pandemic World’.
