Can India still make it to T20 World Cup Semifinals? Here are the possible scenarios

New Delhi: New Zealand has virtually ensured that the Virat Kohli-led side does not reach the semi-finals of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. India suffered an eight-wicket loss against New Zealand in the Super 12 stage of the ongoing tournament on Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium.

India was just restricted to 110/7 in the allotted twenty overs against New Zealand. No batter was able to stay at the crease for a long haul, and what followed was a lackluster performance.

The 2 two big defeats mean that India’s Net Run Rate has seen a new low and from here only 2 teams can qualify from each of the two Super 12 groups. India’s chances to make it to the semi-finals are looking weak at this moment, but still, there is a probability that the men in blue can make it.

Now, Kohli and boys will next take on Afghanistan on Wednesday at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Assuming that India, Pakistan, and New Zealand will defeat the rest of the teams which can be considered as the most probable outcome only if Afghanistan can spoil any side’s party by producing an upset.

'India have to disconnect...': This is what Virat Kohli said after NZ defeat

Let’s have a look at the prospect of Group 2’s semi-final qualifications:

India can qualify if,

It wins all their next 3 matches and that too with some big margins to take the advantage of the Net Run Rate when it is required.

Kohli and Co. can qualify with a good net run rate that too if,

Scenario 1

India defeats Afghanistan by a big margin and Nabi’s men go on to beat New Zealand in their final Super 12 match. However, it is difficult that India will make it to the semis as if this happens then India will be tied with Afghanistan and it is less likely that they will be able to overtake them in terms of the Net Run Rate.

Scenario 2

India has to beat Afghanistan by a big margin and wish that Kiwis go on to beat Afghanistan in their final Super 12 match which means that AFG don not get the 6 points from here.

After that New Zealand should lose to Namibia or Scotland as this will give Kohli and Co. a chance to overtake the Kiwis.
