Shikhar Dhawan ruled out of New Zealand tour with shoulder injury as India announce ODI squad

The injury makes it likely that Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul will open together for the duration of the five-match T20I series, which will give the pair ample opportunity to put forward their case for opening up at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia in October this year.

New Delhi: Sanju Samson will replace the opener for the T20I series, while Prithvi Shaw has been named in his place for the ODI squad.

Dhawan picked up the injury during the third ODI against Australia, landing awkwardly on his shoulder in the process of fielding the ball.

Samson had been included in India’s squad against Sri Lanka earlier this month, making his first T20I appearance in four and a half years when he was picked for the final match of the series. But he had initially missed out on selection for the New Zealand tour.

Shaw meanwhile has not appeared for India since making his debut in a pair of Tests against West Indies in 2018 with great success – he scored 237 runs while being dismissed only twice. Since then injury and form issues have prevented the 20-year-old’s selection, but now looks set to possibly make his ODI debut in New Zealand.

The squads are largely identical to one another, with India seeming to be looking to maintain consistency of selection across white-ball cricket where possible. The only other difference between the squads will be Kedar Jadhav replacing Washington Sundar once the teams move into the ODI series.
