Women’s Premier League: Which are 5 franchisees & how auction will break new ground for women’s cricket?

The idea of WPL, on lines of men’s IPL was mooted for long but the plan was set in motion in October 2022 when the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) decided to take it to next level.

New Delhi: Women’s cricket is all set to break new ground and pique interest of cricket lovers as their own league, one lines of Indian Premiere League (IPL) is all set to take off on March 4, 2023. This will be first edition of Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Today, 5 WPL franchisees will get together in Mumbai’s World Convention Centre to draw their teams for the upcoming women’s cricketing extravaganza from March 4 – 26.

A total of 5 franchisees/teams have been finalized till date and it will see further rise in numbers with time.

Gujarat Giants: This is Ahmedabad based franchise and owned by Adani Group.

UP Warriorz: This is Lucknow based franchise and owned by Capri Global company.

Delhi Capitals: This is Delhi based franchise.

Bengaluru Franchise is owned by Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd

Mumbai Franchise is owned by IndiaWin Sports Pvt Ltd.

The WPL is widely expected to set the cash registers ringing and see exponential growth in women’s cricket, much on lines of Men’s IPL.

The inaugural season of WPL 2023 has 5 teams and will have 23 games. A total of 90 women cricketers will have their new ‘owners’ while the cricket-crazy nation will watch the new money-spinner taking shape. The burgeoning interest of investors in women’s IPL clubbed with country’s love for the game will show unprecedented results.
