New Delhi: Koo App, an Indian alternative to microblogging site Twitter is in the centre of controversy, days after getting national attention and approval from top Central ministers as they alongwith many government departments have made a beeline to join the homegrown application.

Questions are being raised over data security in the indigenous microblogging site, with allegations that the Indian social media app is exposing data of users to foreign servers.

A French cybersecurity has claimed that a lot of sensitive data of users are found to be leaking. To be specific, email, phone number & date of birth of users are being compromised, he claimed. Reports also claimed that servers of Indian social media app are based in China and have considerable investments from Chinese firms.

Koo co-founder punctures ‘false claims’

Koo co-founder Aprameya R today took to Twitter to call out the propaganda makers and gave a detailed information, verifying the ‘Indian-ness’ of App.

“We are an Indian company registered in India and servers are in India,” he tweeted.


Many netizens nodded in agreement and slammed those spreading fake narrative on Koo’s origin.

He said, “The data visible is something that the user has voluntarily shown on their profile of Koo. It cannot be termed a data leak. If you visit a user profile you can see it anyway.”

Further, he called out the vested interests for spreading false propaganda over the fully indigenous app.

Reports claimed that Shunwei Capital, a Chinese investor, has a small single-digit stake in the company.

Reacting to the reports, Koo co-founder tweeted this.

“Koo is an India registered company with Indian founders. Raised earlier capital 2.5 years ago. Latest funds for Bombinate Technologies is led by a truly Indian investor 3one4 capital. Shunwei (single digit shareholder) which had invested in our Vokal journey will be exiting fully,” Aprameya R tweeted.
