Over 3 million accounts banned by WhatsApp India between June – July

The latest report contains details of user complaints received and corresponding actions taken by WhatsApp to counter abuse of its platform.

New Delhi: In a compliance report by WhatsApp, the company said that it banned over 3 million Indian accounts between July 16-31. The action was taken on the 594 grievance reports received by it between the same period of time.

The messaging platform told news agency PTI, that 3,027,000 WhatsApp accounts were banned as per the compliance report filed by it on Tuesday.

“It received 594 user reports between June 16-July 31 across ban appeal (316), account support (137), product support (64), other support (45), and safety (32). 74 accounts were “actioned” during this period”, the report said.

The term “Account Actioned” implicit  that some curative measures were taken on the basis of the report. To Take action is either to ban an account or to restore a previously banned account based on the complaint.

As per a WhatsApp spokesperson, “In order to keep its users safe on the platform, we had applied Artificial Intelligence, data scientists and experts, and other state-of-the-art technology for years”.

“The latest report contains details of user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’S own preventive actions to counter abuse of its platform. In accordance with the IT Rules 2021, we’ve published our second monthly report for the 46 day period of – 16 June to 31 July” he added.

The new IT rules came into effect on May 6 specify that digital platforms with more than 5 million users, have to publish compliance reports every month. It will also require detailed  mentioning of complaints received and the action taken against them by the platform.
