Bangladesh court sentences 14 Islamist militants for attempting to kill PM Sheikh Hasina in 2000

All the convicts are operatives of outlawed Harkatul Jihad Bangladesh (HuJI-B).

New Delhi: Bangladesh court sentenced 14 Islamist militants to death for attempting to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2000.

Judge Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 1 pronounced the verdict in the presence of nine accused.

Sedition charges were brought against the convicts, who are the members of banned militant outfit Harkat ul-Jihad al-Islami Bangladesh (Huji).

They are — Md Azizul Haque alias Md Shah Newaj, Md Lokman, Md Yusuf alias Moshab Morol, Mosaheb Hasan alias Rashu, Md Anisul Islam alias Anis, Sarwar Hossain Miah, Sheikh Md Enamul Haque, Md Mofizur Rahman, Md Mahmud Azahar, Md Rasheduzzaman, Md Tarek Hossain, Md Abdul Wadud Sheikh, Mawlana Amirul Islam, and Mawlana Rafikul Islam.

Of them, Azizul, Lokman, Yusuf, Rashu, and Enamul are still absconding.

Earlier on March 11, the court fixed March 23 for delivering its judgement in the sedition case after both the prosecution and the defence concluded their arguments.
