Blast in Peshawar mosque during Friday prayers; 30 killed, 50 injured

New Delhi: A bomb explosion during Friday prayers at a mosque has resulted in the death of at least 30 persons, with over 50 injured in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar.

The powerful bomb blast happened when people had assembled at the mosque for Friday congregation.

Those injured have been hospitalised. 10 injured persons are said to be in critical state.

“We are in a state of emergency and the injured are being shifted to the hospital. We are investigating the nature of the blast but it seemed to be a suicide attack,” a police official told news agency Reuters.

The blast occurred at the Jamia mosque in Qissa Khwani bazaar area of Peshawar.

According to eyewitnesses, the powerful explosion took place during the prayers.

There are no details available yet on the nature of the blast, reported The News International.

In a statement to the media, advisor to KP Chief Minister Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif confirmed that the explosion took place during Friday prayers.

“Reportedly the terrorists first tried to enter the mosque where they exchanged fire with the police,” said Barrister Saif.

He said that a terrorist managed to enter the mosque and carried out the attack.
