New Delhi: These days high-level meetings are going on in Pakistan to elect the new Army chief and replace General Qamar Javed Bajwa. According to media reports, Shehbaz Sharif’s cabinet will announce the new name on Thursday i.e November 24. On Tuesday, PM Sharif also chaired two important meetings to select the new name among the top three contenders — Lieutenant General Asim Munir, Nauman Mehmood, and Azhar Abbas.

In today’s meeting, Sharif met top military leaders including General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), defence minister Khawaja Asif and other chief security officers.

Who is Asim Munir?

Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah holds a three-star rank in the Pakistan Army. He was Commander Froce Command Northern Areas between October 2014 to December 2016, followed by DG Military Intelligence from December 2016 and October 2018, and Director General of the ISI between October 2018 and June 2019. He is currently serving as a Quartermaster general in the Army.

Who is Nauman Mehmood?

Nauman Mehmood is a lieutenant general in the Pakistan Army. He holds the rank of the President of the National Defence University at present. Notably, he is the alma mater of the University. He previously worked as a commander of the XI corps between November 2019 to November 2021.

Who is Azhar Abbas?

Azhar Abbas also holds a three-star rank in the Pakistani Army. He is currently serving as the 35th Chief of General Staff of the Pakistan Army. He joined the Army as a private secretary to the chief of Army Staff in December 2013. Before becoming the 35th Chief of General Staff, he worked as the Commander of X Corps.
