World’s population crosses 8 billion; China tops the list

Overall population of the world has crossed the 8 billion mark, according to the latest report by United Nations.

New Delhi: Overall population of the world has crossed the 8 billion mark, according to the latest report by United Nations’ World Population Prospects 2022 report. Earlier, the UN also projected that the population will cross the 8 billion mark on its website on World Population Day — July 11. At present, the highest population is reported to be in China. However, India will surpass China as the world’s most populous country by the year 2023.

Over half of the increase in the global population up to 2050 will be concentrated in eight countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and the United Republic of Tanzania.

UN report also projected that the global population will cross 10.4 billion by 2080. The share of the global population at ages 65 and above was projected to rise from 10% in 2022 to 16% in 2050.

In 2019, the UN report said the global life expectancy at birth reached 72.8 years in 2019 with an improvement of 9 years since 1990. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the global life expectancy at birth fell to 71 years in 2021.

The United Nations suggests in its report that the world population could rise to around 8.5 billion in the next 8 years and to 9.7 billion in 2050.

As mentioned earlier 10.4 billion people will be living on the earth during the 2080s which will remain constant at the level until 2100.
