‘World’s smallest baby’ who weighed as much as a pear at birth, returns home after 13 months

Xuan weighed 212 grams, as much as a pear at the time of the birth, and needed extra medical attention.

Singapore: A premature baby, smallest in the whole world, was finally discharged from the National University Hospital, on July 9. The tiny baby had to stay 13 months in the hospital, ever since after her birth.

As per the reports, Kwek Yu Xuan was delivered at only 25 weeks and was 4 weeks premature. Xuan weighed 212 grams, and was as much as size of a pear at the time of the birth, and needed extra medical attention.

After her mother was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, Xuan was delivered by an emergency C-section.

Zhang Suhe, nurse at NUH told The Strait Times, “I was shocked at time of her birth so I spoke to the professor of the department. In my 22 years career, I haven’t seen such a tiny newborn baby. She was so small at the time of birth that we had to wheel her into the neonatal care unit”.

However, Yu Xuan weights 6.3 kg now and is perfectly healthy to be out of medical care. The hospital shared some pictures of the baby on their Facebook profile and wrote: “We are happy for the little fighter and her family, and proud of the care provided by our team. Our best wishes to Little Yu Xuan as she continues to grow, thrive and beat the odds every day.”
