In our material birth, our soul is travelling endlessly, in pleasure and in pain. Immortality means to be blissfully immersed in freedom, in the here and now.
Of the two birds in the “tree of samsara”, one bird hops around on the lower branches, pecking at the fruits, sweet and sour. Sometimes melodious and sometimes screaming, and always active. The higher bird is merely witnessing the doings of the bird below. The higher bird is “Paramatma” and the lower bird is “Jiva Atma”, the one who is bound by karma performed under the influence of desire and ignorance. The soul is then entangled in anger, hatred, jealousy, avarice, delusions and passion, birth after birth and new lives only bring more grief. Actions are followed by reactions with the rich store of inescapable fruits. The poor bird is caught in the net of infinite series of births and deaths and struggles for release. One can only heal and know that there is more to life, and there is freedom. Healing hugs of comfort. Love from the reservoir of forgiveness.
