Buddha Purnima 2023: Date, Time, Significance and Rituals

New Delhi: Buddha Purnima commemorates the birth anniversary of Lord Gautam Buddha, who is considered the father of the Buddhist religion. It is widely celebrated not only in India but also in various other parts of the world. It holds immense significance among the Buddhist people across the globe.

Date and Time of  Buddha Purnima

Every year Buddha Purnima falls on the full Moon day. This year also it is being celebrated on the month of Vaishakh on the 5th of May. The festival will coincide with the Lunar Eclipse of the year, which will fall on the same day.

Significance of Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima is celebrated in East and South Asia mostly. This year will commemorate the 2585th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. It is believed that Lord Buddha got enlightened on this day. Buddha Purnima is also known by various other names Buddha Jayanti, Vesak, Vaishakha etc.

The lifespan and birthplace of Lord Buddha are still uncertain. Some people believe that he lived in a time span of  563 to 483 BC. Lumbini in Nepal is considered his birthplace and Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh is the place where he took his last breath at the age of 80.

According to some Hindu beliefs, Lord Buddha is considered the 9th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. However, this is not believed in South India. As per Vaishnavit followers, lord Krishna is considered the 9th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and Balrama as the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Rituals of Buddha Purnima

On the occasion of Buddha Purnima people clean their homes and make Swastika at the entrance of their house. Some people sprinkle Gangajal in their houses in order to remove negative energies. Other than this, people donate food and clothes to the needy.
