Raksha Bandhan is also known as Rakhi, and is observed on the Purnima Tithi (Full Moon day) in the month of the holy month of Shravana (a month dedicated to Lord Shiva) as per the Hindu calendar.

As Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated this week, there are several things that one must know about why Rakhi is celebrated, the date and history, and the way of tying the Rakhi on the wrist of brothers hand.

What is Raksha Bandhan?
Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi is day which his celebrated to pay tribute to the brother-sister’s relationship. On this day sisters tied a sacred thread-Rakhi on the wrist of their brothers and pray for their good health, prosperous life and success. While tying the Rakhi, sisters also perform a few rituals. This sacred thread-Rakhi is a symbol of protection and security.
When is Raksha Bandhan?
This year, Raksha Bandhan will be observed on the Purnima Tithi, i.e. on the full moon day in the month of Shravana i.e August 11, but due to Bhadra falling on the same time, this mahurat is not auspicious to tie rakhi. It is said that one must avoid tying Rakhi when Bhadra prevails.

This year one must tie Rakhi after 8:51 pm on August 11th till 12th August during the Purnima tithi, i.e., up to 7:16 am.

Famous astrologer while talking to Newsroompost said that this year on must tie Rakhi only on August 12.

In which hand should Rakhi be tied?

There are time when sisters make mistakes and tie Rakhi on the left hand of their brothers, so pleases don’t do this Rakhi is usually secured and tied on the wrist of  right hand.

Brothers must sit facing the west direction while their sisters tie the Rakhi. However, the customs may vary accordingly.
