New Delhi: Surdas Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Sant Surdas, who is known for his poetry and devotional songs and was born on Shukla Paksha Panchami of Vaishakha month. He was a devotee of Lord Krishna and it is his 545th birth anniversary.

Significance of Surdas Jayanti
Surdas was a great devotee of Lord Krishna. His composition consists of music devoted to Lord Krishna. Therefore devotees pray and chant the songs of lord Krishna on this day. Devotees observe fast as well devoting to Lord Krishna and Surdas.
About Sant Surdas:
Surdas was a musician and a devotional saint to his lord Krishna. He was born in 1478 C.E. in Sihi village of Faridabad but some peoples believe, he was born at Runkta near Agra. He was a blind child due to which his family abandoned him and, had to face many difficulties in life. Mughal emperor Akbar was also influenced by his melodies, and he become his patron. Surdas has composed about 1,00,000 musical melodies, which is known by the name Sur Sagar ( Ocean of Melodies), out of which only 8000 compositions are known at the present time.
He spent his last days in Braj, devoting his life to Lord Krishna, He earned his livelihood by donating his songs and in exchange taking money. Living a life of a devotee, he earned much appreciation and admiration for his songs and music. He was also known for the Bhakti movement in Northern India.
