New Delhi: Every year, Buddha Purnima is celebrated commemorating the birth of Lord Buddha. This year Buddha Purnima is celebrated across the globe on May 16 (Monday). According to the traditions of the Buddhist, Prince Siddhartha Gautama, later known as Gautama Buddha, was born in 623 B.C. in Nepal’s Terai region at Lumbini.

However the exact date of Lord Buddha’s birth is not known. Buddha Purnima is  celebrated every year based on the Hindu lunar calendar. In parts of South and Southeast Asia, Lord Buddha’s birth is celebrated as part of Vesak, a festival that also marks the day of Buddha’s enlightenment.

In the month of Vaishakha, Buddha Purnima is said to be very auspicious. It is said that it was on this day that Gautama Buddha obtained enlightenment. Buddha Purnima is also known as Buddha Jayanti, Vesak and Vaishaka. Lord Buddha is believed to be the ninth incarnation of Lord Krishna as the eighth form of Lord Vishnu in North India. Meanwhile, Lord Buddha is never believed to be an avatar of Lord Vishnu.
