Apple’s ecosystem creates 1 lakh new direct jobs in 19 months under PLI scheme

The jobs have been created by Apple’s key vendors in India and their component suppliers who help in iPhone manufacturing under the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.

New Delhi: Apple has created 1,00,000 jobs in the last 19 months and with this, it is the largest blue-collar job creator in the electronics sector. The jobs have been created by Apple’s key vendors in India and their component suppliers who help in iPhone manufacturing under the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.

According to a report by Business Standars, the PLI scheme, launched in August 2021 has boosted job creation and Foxconn Hon Hai, Pegatron and Wistron, who assemble iPhones, have created 60 percent of these new jobs. The number of jobs created is 7,000 more than what was promised and as March 2023 will mark the end of the financial year, a few more thousand jobs are expected to be generated by the firm.

The rest 40 percent of jobs have been generated by Apple’s ecosystem of components and chargers suppliers. Suppliers, including Tata Electronics, Salcomp, Avary, Foxlink, Sunwoda, and Jabil have generated 40,000 additional jobs.

Tamil Nadu-based Foxconn Hon Hai generated over 35,500 jobs in this period, while Pegatron in Tamil Nadu and Wistron in Karnataka, generated 14,000  and 12,800 jobs respectively. Salcomp has created over 11,000 jobs while Tata Electronics, Apple’s key component supplier for mechanical parts, has also contributed a large number.

As per the government’s estimate, reportedly, for every direct job, nearly three times the number of indirect jobs are created in electronics manufacturing. This means the apple ecosystem has created a total of about 3,00,000 direct and indirect jobs.

According to a government press release in October 2020, it was estimated that under the smartphone PLI scheme, about 200,000 direct jobs would be created in five years.
