I-T sleuths raid offices of Chinese telecom major Huawei for tax evasion

The company’s financial documents, account books & overseas transactions are being probed by the Income Tax dept

New Delhi: The Chinese telecom major Huawei has come under the scanner of the Income Tax department for alleged tax evasion. The I-T sleuths carried out raids at its multiple offices spread over 3 cities, as part of tax evasion investigation.

The raids were launched at the company’s premises in Delhi, Gurugram (Haryana), and Bengaluru in Karnataka on Tuesday.

This is the second such raid on the Chinese mobile maker in the last two months. The IT officials are also understood to have seized some documents of the company.

According to reports, the company’s financial documents, account books & overseas transactions are being probed by the Income Tax dept.

The government has planned for a rollout for 5G services in the current financial year but the spectrum auction process remains out of bound for some Chinese players specifically Huawei.

Last year, offices of some other Chinese companies like Xiaomi and Oppo were searched by the IT sleuths for alleged unaccounted income worth Rs 6,500 crore.

Earlier this week, the Information & Technology Ministry blocked 54 Chinese Apps citing security threats. Some of the noted banned Apps were Tencent Xriver, Nice Video Baidu, Viva Video Editor, and gaming app Garena Free Fire Illuminate.
