Reliance Jio has introduced JioSpaceFiber; India’s first countrywide gigabit internet service accessible via satellite

This accomplishment demonstrates the capability of the service to close the digital divide in underserved areas and provide high-speed internet in locations where it is most needed.

New Delhi: On Friday – October 27, Reliance Jio said that it has successfully tested India’s first satellite-based gigabit internet service, which could be used to provide high-speed internet to rural or remote portions of the nation.

In the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Reliance Jio showcased India’s first satellite-based GigaFiber service, named Jio SpaceFiber, during the India Mobile Congress 2023 in New Delhi.

Jio has announced that it would be working with SES, a firm located in Luxembourg that specialises in satellite communications, to deliver internet via medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellites. According to the claims made by the firm, the SES O3v and o3b mPOWER networks are the only MEO constellation that can provide internet services comparable to fibre optic connections from space.

JioSpaceFiber is going to revolutionise the digital landscape of India by delivering high-speed broadband to parts of the nation that have had limited access to the internet in the past. This is a huge step forward for India’s digital infrastructure.

To demonstrate the scope of JioSpaceFiber’s coverage, four of India’s most inaccessible areas have already been brought online: Gir (Gujarat), Korba (Chhattisgarh), Nabarangpur (Odisha), and ONGC-Jorhat (Assam).

This accomplishment demonstrates the capability of the service to close the digital divide in underserved areas and provide high-speed internet in locations where it is most needed.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited Chairman Akash Ambani shared his vision for JioSpaceFiber, noting that it would provide broadband internet connectivity to millions of households and businesses for the first time. This new service is a giant leap forward in connecting people all over the world with the information and entertainment resources they need to fully engage in the digital society.

SES’s Chief Strategy Officer, John-Paul Hemingway, gave high marks to the partnership with Jio and emphasised the service’s contribution to the Digital India programme in India. This innovative approach, he said, is meant to provide high internet speeds—tens of gigabits per second—to every corner of India.

More than 450 million people are currently being provided with high-speed broadband and wireless internet by Reliance Jio. Jio has introduced JioSpaceFiber to its array of broadband solutions, which already includes JioFiber and JioAirFiber, to make digital services available to every home in India. With this change, people, and companies throughout India will have access to fast and dependable internet connections with little lag time. The satellite network will also increase mobile backup capacity, making Jio’s True5G network more widely accessible and expanding its reach into underserved areas.

The collaboration between Jio and SES, a major satellite operator, is a notable facet of this project. SES gives Jio access to its state-of-the-art MEO satellite fleet. SES’s O3b and new O3b mPOWER satellites have become Jio the exclusive supplier of this innovative technology, allowing it to deliver scalable and cost-effective internet solutions over the whole of India. This is the first of its kind in the business, and it stands out because of its durability and adaptability.
