CUET 2022: Equipercentile method to be used for scoring, check how it works

The method will lead to a single percentile series for each paper, showing a candidate’s performance in all tests conducted in that subject.

New Delhi: Candidates who appeared for the Common University Entrance Test-Under Graduate (CUET-UG) will be assigned a percentile based on the score for each subject they opted for. The percentile will then be ‘normalised’ to reflect the performance in that subject across all sessions in which the exams were conducted. This method of scoring is called the equipercentile method.

CUET-UG

The method will lead to a single percentile series for each paper, showing a candidate’s performance in all tests conducted in that subject. This will take care of the differences in difficulty levels across the tests. The scoresheet will not have the marks of the candidate, but rather ‘normalised’ scores and percentiles. The rankings will also be calculated on the basis of ‘normalised’ scores.

Talking about the method, Chairperson of the University Grants Commission, M Jagdesh Kumar said that in the equipercentile method, there is the same scale for all candidates independent of, in a given subject, which session they appeared in.

The interpolation method will be used to determine the raw marks of the candidates in the shifts they were not present. Assume, the exams were conducted in three sessions and each candidate sat for it in one session, so the raw marks for the rest two sessions will be calculated through interpolation. Then the average of the hence calculated raw scores will make up the percentile of the candidate.

Over nine lakh candidates appeared for the exams for about 90 universities under the CUET-UG 2022. The exams were conducted in 27 different subjects in which the students had the freedom to choose their own combination of subjects. According to UGC, the result will be declared by September 15.
