Plot
Set in 1979, 20th Century Women centers around Dorothea Fields (played by Annette Bening), a spirited, free-spirited woman who is raising her teenage son, Jamie (played by Lucas Jade Zumann), in Southern California. In a time of cultural upheaval and social change, Dorothea is determined to give Jamie a strong foundation, though she knows she’s not alone in the task. With a little help from two women—Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a photographer and punk rock enthusiast, and Julie (Elle Fanning), a rebellious teen who becomes Jamie’s close friend—Dorothea tries to navigate the complexities of raising a young man in the late 20th century.
The film blends Dorothea’s maternal wisdom with the conflicting viewpoints of the women around her, creating a layered, multifaceted portrayal of a time when societal values were shifting, and women’s roles were being redefined. At its core, 20th Century Women is about the complexities of growing up, shaping identities, and coming to terms with the world around you.
Each character brings a unique perspective on life, love, and the challenges of the 20th century, contributing to the film’s rich exploration of motherhood, womanhood, and growing up.
20th Century Women isn’t just a coming-of-age story—it’s an exploration of how the people who shape us influence the way we see the world, especially in a time of social and political upheaval. It combines nostalgia with humor, but it also leaves a lasting emotional impact as it addresses universal themes of identity, relationships, and the search for meaning.
