Critics have praised Broken Rage for its inventive approach and Kitano’s dynamic direction. Screen Rant describes it as “the most fun I’ve had at a Venice screening this year.

Plot

Takeshi Kitano directed, wrote, and starred in the 62-minute film Broken Rage. The film divides into two parts, each offering a distinct narrative experience.

The film opens with a dark, crime-laden underworld where Nezumi, a seasoned hitman operates. Nezumi is a professional assassin who executes his assignments with chilling efficiency. However, his world unravels when a mission goes awry. This leades to his capture by the police. To avoid imprisonment, Nezumi is coerced into an undercover operation.

He has to infiltrate a formidable yakuza syndicate. This segment delves into themes of survival, loyalty, and the blurred lines between law enforcement and organized crime.

In a surprising twist, the second half of “Broken Rage” reimagines the same narrative through a comedic lens. Kitano employs self-parody techniques, transforming the intense crime drama into a slapstick comedy. The film exaggerates the characters and situations for humorous effect, providing a satirical commentary on the conventions of crime films.

This shift not only showcases Kitano’s versatility as a filmmaker but also offers a playful critique of the genre.

The film now portrays the same characters from the first half with comical, over-the-top traits. It shows the yakuza members as bumbling, inept gangsters, and transforms Nezumi’s intense, stoic persona into a much more absurd and awkward version of itself.

Throughout the film, themes of loyalty to one’s profession and family. The film explores the betrayal that often accompanies life in the criminal world. Nezumi’s internal struggle is key to both halves of the movie, especially as he walks a fine line between doing his job and preserving his own life.
