Candyman OTT Release: The Candyman (2021) film is a direct sequel to the original Candyman (1992) and serves as a modern reimagining of the classic horror story. It is directed by Nia DaCosta and co-written by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and DaCosta,

the movie explores themes of racial inequality, generational trauma, and urban legends. The Film will be premiering soon on Amazon Prime’s MGM Channel on the 31st of January, 2025.

Plot

The film begins in 1977 in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing projects.

A young boy named William Burke encounters a man named Sherman Fields, whom the neighborhood knows as an eccentric with a hook for a hand. When someone finds a piece of candy with a razor blade inside, people falsely accuse Sherman of harming children.

The police hunt him down and brutally kill him in the projects.

After his death, the razor blade candy incidents continue, solidifying Sherman’s transformation into a vengeful spirit—the Candyman.

Developers have gentrified Cabrini-Green, tearing down much of the original housing and replacing it with upscale developments. Anthony McCoy is a struggling artist.

He lives in one of these new apartments with his girlfriend, Brianna Cartwright, a successful art gallery director.

Searching for inspiration for his art, Anthony learns about the legend of Candyman from Brianna’s brother, Troy. Troy tells a chilling story about Helen Lyle—the protagonist of the original Candyman film.

According to Troy’s version, Helen went insane, kidnapped a baby from Cabrini-Green, and was consumed by fire. However, this is only a partial retelling of the events of the first film.

Anthony becomes obsessed with the Candyman myth and begins exploring the old Cabrini-Green area, where he meets an older William Burke.

Burke recounts the true story of Sherman Fields. He entails how his violent death at the hands of the police cemented his status as a local urban legend.

The film ties the Candyman myth to systemic racism and the cycles of violence and injustice faced by Black communities.
