New Delhi: The success of Varisu and Thunivu is a box-office clash of herculean proportions not compromising the fandom for either of the films. This clash of superstars Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar collectively made their films around Rs. 60 crores. Vijay’s Varisu and Ajith’s Thunivu both saw incredible appreciation among the fans.
Varisu collected Rs. 30 crores on opening day with Tamil Nadu alone contributing about Rs. 20 crores. Thalapathy Vijay has a record for giving films that cross the Rs. 20 crore mark on their first day since Mersal in 2017. In fact, this is the megastar’s sixth-ranking film in terms of opening-day earnings. This extraordinary achievement is not accomplished by any actor so far in the industry.
Thunivu starring Ajith made close to Rs. 29 crores on its opening day with great love from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Many see this clash as very similar to the past releases of these stars. As a matter of fact, in Pongal 2014, Vijay and Ajith came to head with their films Jilla and Veeram.
Jilla was directed by RT Neason and had Vijay and the Malayalam superstar Mohanlal playing the leading roles and collected Rs. 32.5 crores. While Ajith’s Veeram directed by Siva clashed with the success of Jilla at the box office garnering Rs. 34.25 crores.

The fans complimented Ajith Kumar for his terrific screen presence in Thunivu and Vijay for his charisma, savouring both these big Pongal releases. But not in peace. The clash between these stars wasn’t limited to the box office, fans resorted to fights outside Rohini theatre in Chennai. Tearing posters the police had to resort to mild baton charges to disperse the feuding crowd. This only goes to prove the love and loyalty people feel for both actors.
