Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End OTT Release: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a critically acclaimed fantasy anime and manga series written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe.
The series explores how people value time differently, especially from the perspective of an immortal being. As Frieren retraces her past, she uncovers emotions she previously ignored. The story features well-developed world-building, intricate magic systems, and breathtaking battles.
As of February 2025, “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” has completed its first season, which aired from September 2023 to March 2024, totaling 28 episodes. It’s second season is rumoured to release in the summer of 2025.
Plot
The story begins after the legendary hero party—comprising Frieren, the hero Himmel, warrior Eisen, and priest Heiter—successfully defeats the Demon King. While her human companions age and eventually pass away, Frieren remains untouched. She is an elf with a near-immortal lifespan and has long gotten used to such losses along her journey.
However, the loss of Himmel makes her realize how little she truly understood about the humans she traveled with for so long.
Determined to change, Frieren embarks on a new journey. She takes on an apprentice named Fern and later joins a young warrior named Stark. She revisits old memories as they travel across lands once visited by her former party. Frieren encounters new allies and enemies, and slowly learns what it truly means to cherish time with others.
As an elf who has lived for over a thousand years, Frieren experiences time very differently from humans. What seems like a fleeting moment to her such as a decade-long journey can be an entire lifetime for her human companions.
This disconnect makes her take their presence for granted. She only realizes the depth of their bonds only after they are gone. Frieren never made an effort to understand Himmel while he was alive. After his death, she embarks on a journey to retrace their steps. She only wishes to understand him in retrospect.
