New Delhi: The history of cinema has witnessed some great movies on the themes of womanhood. Cinema has been a medium to empower and give a voice to women, and over-the-top (OTT) platforms have proven to be a cherry on the top.

1. Bombshell

Directed by Jay Roach, Bombshell is a film based on true events. The plot follows a group of women who take on Fox News head Roger Ailes and the toxic and misogynistic atmosphere he presided over at the network. The film features some powerful performances by Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman.

The film can be watched with a Lionsgate Play subscription on Amazon Prime Video.

2. Parched

You know it will come out real and honest when women tell women’s stories. Parched, directed by Leena Yadav, is a film set in Rajasthan where four women find their way through the socio-cultural challenges. The film features Radhika Apte, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Surveen Chawla as the leading ladies.

3. Pieces of a Woman

The synopsis of the film is as follows, “When a young mother’s home birth ends in unfathomable tragedy, she begins a year-long odyssey of mourning that fractures relationships with loved ones in this deeply personal story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss.” Directed by Kornél Mundruczó, the film stars Vanessa Kirby.

4. Queen

This Vikas Bahl film starring Kangana Ranaut tells the story of a girl from a traditional family who sets out on a solo honeymoon after her marriage gets cancelled. It is a popular and impactful film by Vikas Bahl. The film also stars Rajkummar Rao and Lisa Haydon.

The film is available on Netflix.

5. Hidden Figures

The plot follows African-American women mathematicians who played an important role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program. The film explores two layers of social challenges explored, in the form of challenges faced by a person of colour and by women.

The film is directed by Theodore Melfi and is streaming on Disney+Hotstar.
