New Delhi: Many Indian films in 2023 broke or set box office records, making it a banner year for the industry. There is still time for some of the year’s most anticipated films, including Dunki and Salaar: Part 1-Ceasefire, to hit theatres, so more records might be on the way.
Ramesh Bala, an expert in the film industry, took to Twitter on Sunday and wrote, “2023 Indian movies that grossed ₹650 crore plus at the worldwide box office 1. Pathan 2. Jawan 3. Jailer 4. Gadar 2 5. Animal – still running.”

1. Pathaan
Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, became the first film in 2023 to earn over Rs 650 crore at the international box office. Sacnilk reports that the espionage thriller, which featured Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, had a lifetime global revenue of Rs 1055 crore, and was released around Republic Day. As a ruthless mercenary with a deep-seated grudge launches a catastrophic assault on the nation, the plot thickens with an Indian agent racing against him.
2. Gadar 2
Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 and Rajinikanth’s Jailer were both released simultaneously and grossed over Rs 650 crore globally. According to Sacnilk, the total global collection of Gadar 2 was Rs 686 crore. In the plot, Tara Singh’s son Jeete embarks on a daring mission to find his father, who goes missing after a conflict and is thought to be held captive in Pakistan. Along the way, they stumble into a maze that they must navigate with all their might.
3. Jailer
The cinema trade expert Manobala Vijayabalan stated that Jailer made more than Rs 650 crore globally. A former jailer embarks on a quest for the people responsible for his son’s murder in this Tamil film that also has Hindi, Kannada, and Telugu versions.
4. Jawan
According to Sacnilk, Shah Rukh Khan’s other 2023 smash, Jawan, made Rs 1,160 crore globally. A high-octane action thriller, it follows the personal journey of a son named Azad and his father named Vikram Rathore as they strive to right society’s wrongs.
5. Animal
After just nine days in theatres, the action flick Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, has amassed a global total of more than Rs 660.89 crore. Although it has received criticism for its ‘flawed’ characters and troublesome situations, the film is still on track. The plot revolves around a son’s love for his father, who cannot understand the depth of his son’s love. In a twist of fate, his son’s intense feelings of devotion to his father and family end up causing friction between them.
