During his victory speech at the award event, Nolan paid tribute to Heath Ledger, his Dear Friend from his picture “The Dark Knight,” who played the antagonist.

“The only time I’ve ever been on this stage before was accepting one of these on behalf of our dear friend, Heath Ledger, and that was complicated and challenging for me,” Nolan said.

“In the middle of speaking, I got all stuck, and Robert Downey Jr. caught my eye and gave me a look of love and support — the same look he’s giving me now”, he added.

The Dark Knight actor died of an accidental overdose at age 28 before the film’s release. He won many posthumous accolades for his frightening Joker portrayal, including the Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
