Plot
Arun Roy directs Hiralal, a Bengali biographical drama that portrays the life and contributions of Hiralal Sen, India’s first filmmaker. The film captures his passion, struggles, achievements, and ultimate downfall, providing a poignant and insightful look into the forgotten pioneer of Indian cinema.
The story begins in late 19th-century Kolkata. The film introduces young Hiralal Sen as a curious and imaginative individual. Born into a middle-class Bengali family, Hiralal initially explores still photography, a novel fascination at the time. His passion for visual storytelling leads him to work with Girish Chandra Ghosh, a renowned playwright and theater personality.
While working in theater, motion pictures mesmerized Hiralal when he witnesses foreign filmmakers showcasing silent films in Kolkata. Inspired by this new form of entertainment, he dreams of bringing Indian stories to life through cinema. However, film technology is in its infancy, and there is no local infrastructure to support such an endeavor.
Determined to make films in India, Hiralal collaborates with Amarendranath Dutta and Motilal, his close associates. He sets up the Royal Bioscope Company, one of India’s first film production houses. With limited resources and no formal training, he experiments tirelessly to develop his own motion pictures.
Hiralal’s first success comes when he films scenes from popular Bengali stage plays, particularly those of Girish Ghosh’s productions. His films gain popularity in elite cultural circles, and he becomes a respected figure in Kolkata’s theater and arts scene.
As the father of Indian advertising films, Hiralal creates India’s first-ever advertisement film, promoting a local brand. This establishes his reputation as a filmmaker with a commercial vision.
