Plot

In 1971, as Brazil descends deeper into the grip of a brutal military dictatorship, the country finds itself silencing dissent through surveillance, intimidation, and violence. Amid this turbulent political climate, the Paiva family stands out as a beacon of warmth and idealism. Rubens Paiva, a respected engineer and former congressman with a strong sense of justice, lives with his wife Eunice and their five children in a lively, welcoming beachside home in Rio de Janeiro. Their house becomes a gathering place for intellectuals, artists, and students—a safe haven for open conversation and progressive ideas in a time when such freedoms are increasingly under threat.

However, their peaceful existence is shattered when Rubens is unexpectedly detained by military officials under the pretense of questioning. The family, accustomed to his strong presence and unwavering principles, is thrown into a state of confusion and fear. Days pass, then weeks, and Rubens never returns. No official explanation is given. No charges are filed. The military denies any knowledge of his whereabouts, leaving Eunice and the children to navigate a terrifying limbo between hope and despair.

As Eunice fights to uncover the truth behind her husband’s disappearance, she is forced to confront a system built on secrecy and repression. The Paiva children, once sheltered by the warmth of their home, begin to awaken to the harsh reality of political persecution. The story becomes not only about a man taken by the regime, but about a family’s resilience in the face of unrelenting fear—and their determination to hold onto truth, memory, and dignity amid one of the darkest chapters in Brazil’s history.
