Plot

Kabul, August 14, 2021 — On the Brink of Collapse

On the eve of one of the most dramatic geopolitical upheavals in recent history, the atmosphere in Kabul is thick with dread. The Taliban forces, relentless and fast-moving, have advanced to the very edges of the Afghan capital. Inside embassies across the city, tension simmers as foreign diplomats scramble to prepare for a swift and secure evacuation. The French embassy, along with its Italian, German, and American counterparts, initiates emergency protocols, believing they still have time to act.

But that belief is shattered within hours.

By August 15, the Taliban seize control of Kabul with alarming speed, and they throw every carefully laid evacuation plan into disarray. What officials intend as an organized withdrawal quickly turns into a frantic effort of urgent improvisation. Diplomats, special police units, and embassy staff must now coordinate under immense pressure — not only to secure their own safe passage but to protect the hundreds of Afghans who have worked alongside them and are now in imminent danger.

As panic spreads and the once-bustling city plunges into a state of fear and uncertainty, the streets become flooded with desperate men, women, and children — all clinging to the hope of escape. Crowds surge toward the airport, the last gateway to freedom, as armed militants begin to seize control of the city’s main arteries. The chaos is unimaginable. Gunfire echoes in the distance. Dust and fear hang in the air.
