Rooted in rich Indian folklore, the film is a grand retelling of how one man’s unwavering act of devotion earned him a place in spiritual history.

Following its theatrical run, Kannappa is expected to begin streaming in the coming months. While an official OTT release date has yet to be confirmed.

Plot

The story of Kannappa, a rugged and fearless hunter from ancient India, is one of profound transformation and unwavering devotion. Initially, Kannappa is portrayed as an atheist—skeptical of divine beings and dismissive of religious practices. Raised in a world where survival meant facing the harsh realities of nature, he had little belief in gods or rituals.

However, everything changes when Kannappa has a life-altering encounter with Lord Shiva. The tale begins when he ventures into a forest and stumbles upon a Shiva lingam (a representation of Lord Shiva) that had been abandoned and neglected. Despite his disbelief, Kannappa’s curiosity and respect for the natural world draw him to the spot. His discovery sets in motion a sequence of events that will challenge his beliefs and lead him to embrace a path of deep devotion.

The turning point comes when Kannappa, recognizing that the Shiva lingam is a sacred object, decides to offer it his services. In an attempt to please the deity, he brings offerings of meat and wild food—items deemed impure in traditional worship. But Shiva, ever compassionate, does not reject his offering. Instead, he tests Kannappa’s commitment and devotion, pushing the hunter to go beyond his mere actions and into the realm of pure sacrifice.

As part of his devotion, Kannappa embarks on a series of miraculous acts of sacrifice. One of the most iconic acts that define his deep, unconditional love for Lord Shiva is when he plucks out his own eyes and offers them to the deity. According to legend, as he observes that the Shiva lingam needs “eyes” to gaze upon it, Kannappa, driven by his fervor and spiritual yearning, decides to offer his own sight.
