The incredibly upbeat Telugu song from the movie “RRR” has gone viral around the world and received an Oscar nomination along with three other Indian movies.

The smash hit “Naatu Naatu”

“Naatu Naatu”means “Dance Dance” in the southern Language Telugu.

In the music video, the Indian men in western attire kick up dust, defying all the rules of traditional dancing, and starting to bounce. The dance ultimately turns into a competition between the British and the Indians. To the shock of their male counterparts, all the Englishwomen joyfully jiggle to “Naatu.”

What makes “Naatu Naatu” special? The song doesn’t carry any trash of Bollywood’s stardom or its hype or popularity. The movie RRR and its music have particularly represented the South Indian Tollywood film Industry.

Besides, the song was shot at the Mariinsky Palace, the residence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It took around 17 days to complete the shoot with 1000 crew members. And surprisingly, the shoot was completed just six months before the Russia-Ukraine War.

“RRR”- Rise, Roar, Revolt

Director SS Rajamouli and his movie RRR need no introduction. RRR, which has captivated the globe, has left a trail of devoted followers in its wake. The film received the first Oscar nomination for a Telugu film.

The production of “RRR” was believed to have cost €62 million (about $68 million), making it the most costly film ever filmed in India. The song’s production alone cost €1.7 million.  Considering the location, it is indeed one of the expensive movies from South India.

Chances of “Naatu Naatu” and other nominations:

Whatever transpires, filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli seemed content with the outcome. He has publicly stated that he made the film for the audience, not for critical praise.

Additionally, “RRR” viewers have been kind in their time. The movie had been among Netflix’s top 10 non-English-language movies for 16 weeks as of January 15. It is the longest time of any title on the list.

Furthermore, it made over $100 million in revenue globally not long after its March 2016 cinema premiere.

Indian viewers are optimistic about the other movies competing for the Oscars short list, even if “RRR” does not receive an Oscar. Other Oscars nominations are Shaunak Sen’s All That Breathes and Kartiki Gonsalves’ The Elephant Whisperers.
