Oscars 2022: Will Smith gets teary-eyed on winning ‘Best Actor’ after 20 years of his first nomination [WATCH]

Eyes filled with tears, Smith kissed his wife Jada Pinkett Smith before getting on the stage to accept the honor

New Delhi: Hollywood star Will Smith was awarded ‘best actor in a lead role’ at the 94th Academy awards held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Smith has won the Oscar Award for Best Actor for his film ‘King Richard’. The actor broke down on the stage while receiving the award. Wiping tears, he thanked his team. He also apologized for punching comedian Chris Rock.

Eyes filled with tears, Smith kissed his wife Jada Pinkett Smith before getting on the stage to accept the honor. The actor later moves on to an emotional speech.

In his Oscars speech, Smith said, “I was the first defender of his (Richard Williams) family. At this moment I am overwhelmed with what God is calling me to do in this world. Making this film I got to protect who was one of the most delicate people. I got to protect Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton, two actresses playing Venus and Serena”.

“I am being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people to do what we do. You gotta be able to take abuse, people will talk crazy about you and disrespect you and to pretend that it is okay”, he added.

“It’s like I wanna be a vessel for love, I wanna say thank you to Venus and Serena and the entire Williams family for trusting me with your story.”

Smith concluded his speech by expressing his wish to be an “ambassador of that kind of love, care and concern”.

Along with Smith, Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick… Boom!), Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog), and Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos) were also nominated in the same category.
