Plot
The plot revolves around a bunch of idle web surfers who create a website that becomes a meme culture cult hit. But when internet users start treating even important subjects like memes or jokes, it becomes messy. The documentary delves into the origins of memes and how they became popular, including topics such as online pranks like Rickrolling and other conspiracy theories.
Because of this, it became necessary to segment discussions and implement stringent measures to prevent the spread of political objectives, viral conspiracies, or memes. An important case in point dates to the turbulent circumstances surrounding the Capitol incident in the US under the Trump administration.
In The Antisocial Network, we will learn that the internet and meme culture had their start when a bunch of lonely youths who were bored one day decided to form an online community—and in the process, they broke conventional reality. It explores the disturbances that broke out in the Capitol and the development of QAnon. In their unique ways, the internet community warped the facts.
A channel that generated issues for the authorities due to its enormous meme propagation, The 4chan, is mentioned in the film. It was personified before the channel’s visual depiction became serious and began targeting millions of people.
When and Where to Watch?
The Antisocial Network: Memes to Mayhem explores the chaos that ensues when internet users disregard norms in favour of extreme behaviour. On April 5, the documentary will only be available for viewing on Netflix.
