Plot
Set in a quiet New England seaside town, The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane follows the mysterious life of 13-year-old Rynn Jacobs (Jodie Foster), a highly intelligent and independent girl who lives alone in a secluded house. The townspeople are led to believe that Rynn’s father, a poet, resides with her, but in reality, he is nowhere to be found. Rynn fiercely guards her solitude, ensuring that no one enters her home or questions her living situation too closely.
As Halloween night approaches, Rynn’s peaceful existence is disturbed by Frank Hallet (Martin Sheen), the predatory and creepy son of the town’s influential landlady, Mrs. Hallet (Alexis Smith). Frank has a reputation for being a dangerous man with an unsettling interest in young girls, and he begins making unwanted visits to Rynn’s home. His mother, Mrs. Hallet, also grows suspicious about Rynn’s living situation, demanding to see her father.
One day, Mrs. Hallet forces her way inside Rynn’s house while the girl is out. She finds some of Rynn’s belongings and begins snooping around the basement, but before she can leave, Rynn catches her in the act. A heated confrontation follows, during which Rynn desperately tries to keep Mrs. Hallet from discovering the truth. In the struggle, Mrs. Hallet accidentally falls down the basement stairs and dies. Panicked yet composed, Rynn hides her body in the basement, determined to keep her secret safe.
The film follows along Rynn as she struggles to scramble and fix the mess she has made with utmost effort.
