New Delhi: Streaming behemoth Netflix is releasing some of the most frightening, real-life documentaries consecutively into 2024, raising our expectations day by day.
One fascinating topic that the forthcoming documentary Unlocked: A Jail Experiment will tackle is advancing inmates’ rights and well-being. As the documentary delves into the jail population’s plight, Eric Higgins, an Arkansas sheriff, is moved to take action to protect the prisoners’ rights to freedom and dignity.
About Unlocked: A Jail Experiment
Sheriff Eric Higgins of Arkansas had an innovative approach to address the high recidivism rates and deplorable prison facilities in the town he had dedicated his career to serving. He planned to conduct a social experiment in a prison in Little Rock with the hope of providing the inmates there with a real alternative to jail.
One of the primary goals of imprisonment is to dissuade offenders from committing more crimes; this study aims to assess whether a more decentralized and autonomous jail system might achieve this goal.
Through exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes access, Unlocked: A Jail Experiment explores the consequences of granting inmates more freedom, including the facility to enter and exit their cells and make decisions about the operation of specific unit functions. Some choose to keep the peace and start over with their newfound independence, while others rebel against the established order and even each other; it is up to Sheriff Higgins to determine the efficacy of his tactics.

Eric Higgins is prepared to observe the inmates’ responses to this six-week program. Inmates in this program will have to answer for their actions both inside and outside the jail. In this new docuseries on Netflix, every aspect of the program will be highlighted.
The trailer shows a group of inmates debating how one inmate disrupted the program. There are reports of people talking about the fantastic chance to meet up with relatives they haven’t seen in a long time. As shown in the clip, more freedom and chances will be granted to prisoners as a reward for their excellent behaviour. Higgins hopes to inspire more participation and support.
