Vijay Sethupathi’s Tamil film ‘Maamanithan’ wins Best Asian Film award in Tokyo

The writer and director of the film, Dr Seenu Ramasamy tweeted and announced that the film has won the prestigious award.

New Delhi:  Tamil star and Nation Award winner ‘Makkal Selvan’ Vijay Sethupathi’s film ‘Maamanithan’ bagged the award for the Best Asian Film at the Tokyo Film Awards. It is the top most award referred to as Golden Winner in the festival. The film stars Gayathrie, K. P. A. C. Lalitha, Guru Somasundaram, Anikha Surendran and Shaji Chen, along with Vijay Sethupathi.

The writer and director of the film, Dr Seenu Ramasamy tweeted and announced that the film has won the prestigious award. He wrote, “Category ( Best Asian Film) Golden Winner Happy to share our #Maamanithan feature film Won Tokyo Film Awards 2022.” He also thanked the producer-composer of the film Yuvan Shankar Raja and the crew members. 

Other winners at the Tokyo Film Awards were Takahiro Kawabe’s Love song at 5p.m (Silver) and Mart Bira’s Nomadic Doctor (Bronze).

‘Maamanithan’ follows the life of an auto driver who becomes a mess due to unexpected issues in the family. In the film, he seels his land to get his children into a private school but gets cheated. Ramasamy is known for bringing stories from rural Tamil Nadu to screen. Vijay Sethupathi, Seenu Ramasamy and Yuvan have worked together in the 2016 coming-of-the-age Tamil drama, Dharma Durai.

The music in the film is composed by the legendary Tamil composer Ilaiyaaraja, along with his two sons Karthik Raja and Yuvan Shankar Raja.

‘Maamanithan’ was released on July 15 on the OTT platform ‘Aha’. The film is streaming in Tamil as it is part of Aha’s latest venture Aha Tamil.
