Vir Das’ Landing on Netflix: Heartfelt, Witty and a Fitting reply

After the Two India controversy, Vir Das was called a terrorist and a traitor by many people.

New Delhi: After the Two India controversy, Vir Das was called a terrorist and a traitor by many people. News channels ran his patriotic and technically accurate poem “I COME FROM TWO INDIAS” saying he should be removed from the country. An emotional Vir Das in his standup special released on Netflix on 25th December 2022 talks about the aftermath of this controversy.

In his own style of speaking the harsh truth, Vir Das outwitted every single statement made against him. Turning things around for himself when he said he thought his “career was over”, he narrated his tale in New York. Amid a swamp of death threats and legal notices, Vir Das says he “likes it on the floor”. Meaning he likes life at its lowest implying that is where his creativity comes from.

While most comics and people of power have abided by and accepted the limited freedom of expression, Vir Das has been a rebel throughout. One would think that an all-time low like the one he faced would change perspectives, but it clearly didn’t. Vir Das came out blazing gun-like words, making comparisons between Mumbai and New York. In plain sight, it might look like he is making fun of the country but if you look closely, it comes from a place of pride.

At the risk of revealing too much, we say that no laws were broken as he wasn’t technically on foreign soil. Vir Das’ narration of his past year is an interesting watch, especially for people who followed him before and during the controversy. It is touching and personal, but also blunt and hilarious. The duality of Vir Das’ style of storytelling is very symbolic and similar to the Two Indias he described.
