Assam man arrested for playing Lord Shiva in Nukkad Natak, Himanta Sarma comes in support

“We condemn the act of playing sacred deities while the issue of protest is not even related to them. Hence, we’ve lodged an FIR”

New Delhi: Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati was seen on the roads of Nagaon city in Assam, riding a Royal Enfield motorcycle, protesting against the rising prices of fuel and gas in the country. Though, his street play didn’t go well with the locals who found it hard to contemplate how the two sacred deities of the Hindu community are at all associated with the subject of protest in the matter.

As a result of a police complaint filed with the Nagaon police, the latter was arrested on the grounds of hurting religious sentiments on Saturday.

Sadar PS Incharge, Manoj Rajvanshi told, “The accused who played Lord Shiva in nukkad natak has been arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, and will soon be presented in the court. 2 other suspects involved in dressing up as Hindu deities are yet to be nabbed”.

The accused reportedly wanted to highlight the issue of rising fuel prices and inflation in the nation via his idea of street play.

Though, the chief minister of the state Himanta Biswa Sarma has now come in support of the individual and has issued ‘appropriate’ orders to the police administration.

Sarma, who was made aware of the incident by a journalist named Navroop Singh on Twitter, tagged him and wrote, “I agree with you @NavroopSingh that Nukad Natak on current issues is not blasphemous. Dressing up is not a crime unless offensive material is said. Appropriate order has been issued to @nagaonpolice”.

Meanwhile, the FIR in the matter was filed by organisations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and Bajrang Dal.  Several BJP workers were reportedly a part of group that filed the complaint.

“If they wanted to protest, they could hold a sit-in and do it, but they chose to dress up as Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati. We condemn the act of playing sacred deities while the issue of protest is not even related to them. Hence, we’ve lodged an FIR in the case”, said a BJP worker Raja Pareek.
